Shongololo Modular Wastewater Treatment Systems

Shongololo Wastewater Treatment Plants are locally manufactured, modular biological wastewater treatment systems designed for simplicity, strength and scalability. The systems treat combined black and grey wastewater and can be configured for applications ranging from individual households through to larger commercial and institutional installations.

How The Shongololo System Works

1. Septic Chamber
Initial separation takes place, allowing heavier solids to settle and lighter material to float. The clearer wastewater then passes into the next chamber.

2. Anaerobic Chamber
Further settling and biological breakdown takes place under oxygen-free conditions before the wastewater passes into the biological reactor.

3. Biological Reactor
The wastewater passes through an aerated biological reactor containing specialised floating bio-media. The media provides a large surface area for beneficial bacteria, which consume organic material and further reduce the biological load in the wastewater.

4. Disinfection / Discharge Chamber
The treated wastewater is sanitised using ozone or mineralisation before being discharged for appropriate reuse applications such as irrigation or toilet flushing.

Domestic System Sizes

SH4 – 4-person plant / 800 litres per day
SH6 – 6-person plant / 1,200 litres per day
SH10 – 10-person plant / 2,000 litres per day

Larger and customised modular treatment systems are also available depending on project requirements.

Treatment & Water Reuse

Shongololo systems are designed to produce treated effluent meeting the DWS General Standard, subject to appropriate system sizing, installation, operating conditions and influent characteristics. Treated effluent can be incorporated into appropriate non-potable reuse applications, including irrigation and toilet flushing.
